This book starts by driving me crazy. Eco’s books, both literary and academic. Although I know that some are just as klanto as the book shows, some seem to be decent, relatively normal people that you wouldn’t suspect of be It also painted a bit of a cartoon portrait of occultists.

It is an awesome tour de force. Anyone know of a good, comprehensive summary of the hidden jokes and self-referential elements in the novel? Eco is funny at times but this book is too long. I read ‘Holy Blood Holy Grail’ sometime back and was a long read for me. Diotallevi quips “Facies hermetica”, and from then on it’s an in-joke.
