Hernando Garcia-Barriga was a Colombian ethnobotanist. In he helped found the Institute of Botany later to become the Institute of Natural Sciences at the University, as well as helping hernado establish the first Botanical Garden in Colombia in That same year, he became professor at the National University of Columbia.

During his career, Garcia Barriga collected plant species which had traditional uses in indigenous cultures, and those used for healing. In he made his first expedition to the forests of Putomayo and decided to produce a multi-volume work dedicated to the medicinal plants of Colombia. The work, entitled Flora Medicinal included the names both scientific and commondescriptions, chemical composition, geographical distribution, and their traditional or medicinal uses.
