In the beginning I almost believed it, because he seemed to have an arc. A lot I found similar stuff to his older Courtney books of which I’ve read. Courtney carries Manyoro for 3 days to a mountain fortress where Manyoro’s mother lives. Assegai took its sweet time to get going, building Leon’s background, as a military man and hunting guide, so that we could understand his final phase or “form” in the last act was important to the story but it was a bit too long for me.

Despite his acquittal Leon’s duties do nothing to improve his falling morale and he considers quitting the army to take up elephant hunting, based on a prediction made by Lusima. All in all, a genuine, stylish, well written historic novel with lots of adventure, incredibly well-researched details, and an exciting plot to hold on to until the end.

On the other hand, I can’t deny that more than once my heartbeat actually increased wikbur listening to these scenes, as narrated in the audiobook. The skin scenes are kept to a minimum, but the action is hot!

Thank heaven this brilliant author is prolific because if this is your first Wilbur Smith book, you are in for a treat! I couldn’t quite lose myself in this book, but I know it was only due to the description of so many animals being killed.

I love your action, descriptions of Africa, and attention to detail when it comes to describing machines and whatnot. Penrod then uses his influence to arrange for Graf Otto von Meerbach, a wealthy industrialist connected to the German war effort, to hire Leon’s services.

This sparked my curiosity about these people, and I found out a little diamond on Youtube: The wildlife, the people, and landscapes all come to life as we follow Leon Courtney’s adventures leading up to World War I.

Overall it was a slow but good enough read and I am hopping that Saffron will absolve Leon’s story in the sequels.

Three stars feels right to me. The characters were weak and unloveable, unhateable as well but then I couldn’t muster up any emotions at all.
